The Ford Racing Mustang Challenge is a new professional
racing series developed by Ford Racing utilizing the
new Ford Mustang FR500S and sanctioned by the Grand
American Road Racing Association. The series will
be a support series to major professional road racing
events across North America. A competitive point structure
and generous purses will make the Ford Racing Mustang
Challenge the perfect affordable, challenging platform
for racers who want to compete in a V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive
car on a level playing field that will showcase driver
ability in high-profile events.
The FR500S car, is the newest addition to the Mustang
FR500 racing family and was developed by Ford Racing
Technology. Featuring a 4.6L 3-valve production engine
and a variety of Ford Racing performance parts, such
as a cold-air kit, high-capacity radiator and two-way
adjustable dampers and springs, plus BFGoodrich g-Force
R1 tires, the FR500S is the first race car built by
Ford Motor Company on a production line intended for
sale to the public.
The race format for the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge
will feature 45-minute "sprint" races. Each race weekend
will include two 30-minute practice sessions, a 25-minute
qualifying session and a 45-minute race. Drivers in
the series will need to have a Grand-Am license.
Championship points will be distributed through 30th
place, with 50 points to win and additional points
for the top five qualifiers (five for pole, four for
second, etc.). One point will be awarded to any driver
who leads a lap, and one point will be awarded to
the driver who leads the most laps.
In addition to the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge,
the Ford Mustang FR500S is also eligible to compete
in the Sports Car Club of America (B-Prepared National
class, ITE Regional class), the National Auto Sport
Association (American Iron class, Super Touring class,
Super Unlimited class) and in the Miller Park Racing
Association (MPRA) at Miller Motorsports Park.
